You can use any citation style you choose in this class (e.g. MLA, APA).<\/p>\n\n
Any ideas or words you get from somewhere else need to be cited in two places<\/strong> in your paper:<\/p>\n\n

What is a Good Thesis?<\/h3>\n\n
All your written assignments require a thesis. Your thesis needs to:<\/p>\n\n

make a claim or state an argument<\/li>\n\t
let the reader know what you are going to say in your paper. It needs to summarize in one sentence what you actually argue in your paper.<\/li>\n\t
be specific and clear. Part 1: Formal paper<\/strong><\/p>\n\n
Pick an issue that came up in the book and write a paper on that issue. The paper is about that issue, not about the book<\/strong>. That means your thesis and arguments are also on the issue (not on the book). You can use the book in your introduction to set some context for your issue (e.g. the book talks about... This brings up a key issue in our society.... That issue is...). You can also use examples from the book to support your discussion of the issue. However, you need to find and use other course readings along with scholarly articles on your issue to support your arguments. Use the Library's web site to find scholarly articles.<\/p>\n\n
This is not a 3-point paper--you should focus on only one point<\/strong>. Your issue or point should be specific and focused so you can write about it in detail. Choosing a concrete example of how some injustice works in society is best. For example, if you are interested in writing about police or legal responses to gendered violence in Canada, that topic is too big a topic for your short paper. Focus it by picking an example of how police or legal responses actually work, or a more specific group to focus on, for example police responses to domestic violence for immigrant women.<\/p>\n\n

This is informal, focusing on both your personal response to the book and to what you found in the scholarly articles you read. It can bring in personal experiences and use \"I\".<\/p>\n\n

This is a formal paper. Choose an issue from Miller's book, your text or the course lectures. Your issue needs to focus on how rape culture or gendered violence is upheld or perpetuated or normalized in Canadian society, and which systems (homophobia, misogyny, white privilege, etc) or groups benefit or are disadvantaged by this. <\/p>\n\n
Your paper is about the issue, not the book. You can use the book and other course readings to discuss your issue but also need to use scholarly sources from the Library web site to support your arguments.<\/p>\n\n

A useful strategy is to choose a concrete example of how rape culture or gendered violence is upheld or perpetuated in real life, for example victim blaming, or homophobic slurs.
