You can use any citation style you choose in this class (e.g. MLA, APA).<\/p>\n\n
Any ideas or words you get from somewhere else need to be cited in two places<\/strong> in your paper:<\/p>\n\n

What is a Good Thesis?<\/h3>\n\n
All your written assignments require a thesis. Your thesis needs to:<\/p>\n\n

make a claim or state an argument<\/li>\n\t
let the reader know what you are going to say in your paper. It needs to summarize in one sentence what you actually argue in your paper.<\/li>\n\t
be specific and clear. Pick an issue that interested you from the Habib book, and write a paper on that issue. The paper is about that issue, not about the book<\/strong>. That means your thesis and arguments are about that issue (not about the book). You can use the book to set some context for your thesis (e.g. Habib's book talks about... This brings up a key issue in our society.... That issue is...). You can also use examples from the book to support your discussion of the issue. However, you need to find and use other course readings along with scholarly articles on your issue to support your arguments. Use the Library's web site to find scholarly articles.<\/p>\n\n
This is not a 3-point paper--you should focus on only one point<\/strong>. Your issue or point should be specific and focused so you can write about it in detail. Choosing a concrete example of how some injustice works in society is best. For example, if you are interested in writing about stereotyped views of Muslim women in Canada, that topic is too big a topic for your short paper. Focus it by picking an example of how those stereotypes actually work in our society, such as work discrimination against women wearing a hijab.<\/p>\n\n

The issues in the list are general, and you will need to pick one specific aspect of the issue to focus on. <\/strong>Choosing a concrete example of how that issue works in society is best. Part 1: Formal paper <\/strong><\/p>\n\n
Pick an issue or practice you haven't written about yet. It can be anything related to the class that you are interested in. For your paper, write about how this issue is an example of injustice in Canada, how it creates or perpetuates that injustice, who benefits from the injustice and who is disadvantaged, and what system(s) are being upheld by the practice (e.g. homophobia, colonialism, patriarchy). You do not have to write about democracy in a political sense, but can focus on how your issue is problematic for Canada as a good society.<\/p>\n\n
You need to use scholarly articles to support your arguments. Use the Library's web site to find them.<\/p>\n\n
This is not a 3-point paper--you need to focus on one point. Ideally you will include intersectionality in your discussion.<\/p>\n\n
You will need to be sure your point is specific enough to write about it in detail. <\/strong>Choosing a concrete example of how that issue works in society is best. For example, if you are interested in racial discrimination in Canada think about how that discrimination actually happens and choose an example (e.g. how people with racialized names on resumes are disadvantaged in job screening). Then make sure your thesis and your paper are about that example, how it reinforces racial hierarchies in Canada, and how it benefits or disadvantages racialized people.<\/p>\n\n
Part 2: Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n
After your paper, under a separate heading, include an informal reflection that talks about what you learned or thought about differently in at least 4 of the class lectures. This can be personal and use \"I\".<\/p>\n\n
