This is a view of the Pantheon, a temple in Rome dedicated to all the gods. We saw this building before in Lesson 1, and it is one of the most famous buildings of the Roman world. You will notice crosses on top of both towers and the obelisk in this painting. Two bell towers were built on either side of the fa\u00e7ade in the 16th century CE by Pope Urban VIII. While bell towers might be expected to be seen on a church, these additions were not popular and were called \u201cdonkey\u2019s ears\u201d by contemporary Romans. This is one of several Egyptian obelisks found in Rome. Known as the Macuteo Obelisk<\/a>, it dates to the reign of Ramesses II in the 13th century BCE but was apparently brought to Rome in antiquity and erected in a temple of Isis. Rediscovered in the 14th century CE, it was erected in its present location in 1711. The Fontana del Pantheon or \u201cFountain of the Pantheon\u201d was originally built in the 16th century but modified several times afterwards. It is fed by an ancient Roman aqueduct called the Aqua Virgo that brings water from hills to the east of Rome. Having fallen into disrepair, it has been repaired periodically since the Middle Ages. The Piazza della Rotonda or \u201cPlaza of the Rotunda\u201d continues to be a public square in Rome today. Located in the Campus Martius where ancient Romans held military drills and assemblies, this has been an important meeting place for millennia. Note the people mingling or passing the time, like the man speaking with the seated friar.
