GIDA encourages the \"Be FAIR<\/strong> (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and CARE<\/strong> (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics)\" principles. Together, t<\/span><\/span>hese principles address the marginalization of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 rights and interests in existing open data and open science movements.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The call for open data and open science can often overlook how the emphasis on greater sharing creates tension for Indigenous Peoples who are also looking to assert greater control over the application and use of Indigenous data and Indigenous Knowledge for collective benefit.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

The pre-amble to this policy statement is indicates that it is \u201cdesigned to serve as a framework for the ethical conduct of research involving Aboriginal peoples. It is offered in a spirit of respect. It is not intended to override or replace ethical guidance offered by Aboriginal peoples themselves. Its purpose is to ensure, to the extent possible, that research involving Aboriginal people is premised on respectful relationships. It also encourages collaboration and engagement between researchers and participants.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

However, researchers should note that concerns surrounding the extent to which international researchers working in Canada are bound by its terms remain. In addition, there are no official mechanisms to monitor and enforce the ethical guidelines it outlines and no official structure for reporting breaches in ethical conduct. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
