Observes that, over a 4-year period, racialized women are the least likely to be invited to give guest talks at the largest geosciences conference, regardless of career stage. Illustrates how this imbalance works to further disadvantage women and racialized scholars. Presenting at scientific conferences is key to academic career progression, and allows scientists to communicate results, develop relationships with collaborators and mentors, and identify funding and job opportunities. Authors recommend blind reviews, the active encouragement of equity-deserving scholars to participate at conferences, and the provision of more financial support to allow underrepresented scholars to attend such conferences.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n

Institutions often lose top scholars who value EDI and are from equity-deserving groups. Goins left his position as Full Professor of Mathematics at Purdue University to move to Pomona College because of the toll it took to remain one of the few Black faculty members in the entire department or faculty. Although he enjoyed mentoring students from underrepresented minorities, his research-intensive university did not reward the service that went into advancing EDI. As a result, he, and other excellent scholars like him leave the institutions so they can prioritize what is important to them. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n
