As discussed in earlier modules, there are many factors that inhibit scholars from equity-deserving groups from disseminating their findings in peer-academic settings and from having their work cited widely. Biases among peer reviewers ensure that new works cite traditional canons and scholars situated in North American and European universities. Universalistic understandings of research excellence tend to undervalue research that is locally relevant or that depends on fostering sincere and respectful relationships with local communities. Consider how the impact of an individual scholar\u2019s body of work responds to diverse local needs and priorities in areas they work in. Researchers have pluralistic understandings of research excellence.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n

As discussed earlier in this section, there is no universally accepted definition of excellent research within any given field. Views of research excellence are informed by the priorities of individual scholars, communities, departments, governments, and other organizations. As society changes, so do research priorities and understandings of research excellence.
