In order to make it easier for you to begin your research, the library created a subject guide to act as a starting point. This guide highlights some particular resources you may find helpful when conducting your research.<\/p>\n\n

This is not an exhaustive list and in many cases you may also want to check out the interdisiplinary databases<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n\n

Searching<\/span> for articles:<\/strong>
\n1. Go to library.wlu.ca and click on \u201cdatabases<\/span>: subjects & titles\u201d
\n2. Select \u201cbrowse by subject\u201d
\n3. Select \u201cinterdisciplinary\u201d
\n4. For this example, I selected \"Proquest\"
\n5. When typing in a search, you need to break down your question into its key bits and each of these bits gets its own line.
\nEg. Public safety and water becomes\u2026
\n
\n\u201cpublic safety\u201d OR \u201ccitizen safety\u201d OR \"public policy\" OR regulations
\nAND water OR \"municipal water\" OR \"water treatment\"
\n
\nIn the drop down boxes beside each of these boxes you\u2019ve filed out, select \u201cAbstract\u201d so that the results are a closer match to the words you used.
\n
\nOther tips once you get your results include clicking \u201cSort by Relevance\u201d so that the results are closer match to the words you used rather than just being the most current. You will also modify your search as it goes to add or subject words as you become more familiar with the topic and the language the people who study the topic use.<\/p>\n\n

Finding known journal articles:<\/strong>
\nIf you come across an article either in your reading or in a bibliography of another article you can search for them from the libraries website. For this example I will use the following article;
\n
\n\u201cOccupational stress and burnout between male and female police officers: Are there any gender differences: by McCarty et all, Policing (Bradford), Vol 30, Iss. 4 (2007).<\/p>\n\n

The most important information you need to find this article is what journal it came out of (in this case Policing (Bradford)) and the volume number, issue number, and year.<\/p>\n\n

1. <\/span><\/span>Go to library.wlu.ca and click on \u201cjournal titles\u201d
\n2. <\/span><\/span>Type in the journal title (in this case Policing (Bradford))
\n3. <\/span><\/span>Click on the journal title from the list given
\n4. <\/span><\/span>A new window will open with options, click whatever one says \u201cFull text\u201d (for our example there are three places this article might be)
\n5. <\/span><\/span>Each one will be different, but use the volume number, issue number, and date to help navigate the journal to find your article.
